Start a Project

Our goals for the Healing Blues project were two-fold. Give our homeless storytellers a voice and support a non-profit organization that benefits the homeless. If you are interested in doing something like that, below are some basic steps to starting your own Healing Blues project.

Have musicians a recording studio and a producer on board

In our case the recording studio was paid a discounted amount but most of the musicians and the producer donated their time.

Find a non-profit working with the homeless to support

Talk to them about the timeline of the project

Have them help you find storytellers

Have them publicize the project

Create a budget for your project

Keep in mind paying storytellers, CD production costs, recording costs, transportation to venues and other expenses

Fundraising

Raise money for your project by writing grants or run a crowd funding campaign

Eventually cell CD’s at concerts and on CD baby or Amazon to raise funds for your non-profit

Document and publicize the following creative process

Feature your documentation in video or photos on crowd funding campaign websites, and social media.

Music production

Have musicians meet the storytellers and work with them or record storytellers stories and then provide them to your songwriters. Use release forms for everyone involved.

Make sure you have money in your budget to pay the storytellers. We paid our storytellers about $300 for their story and gave them copyright on the finished songs.

Have musicians write music

Record the music

Performance

Organize concerts where the music is performed

Organize a CD release concert

Finally

Feel good about what you have done
